Plant nutrients are concentrated macro- and micro-element blends that plants can actually absorb through their roots. Fertilisers feed the soil; nutrients feed the plant directly. In practice, most growers use both — a living substrate underneath and a liquid or powder feed on top. What you buy depends on three things: your growing medium, your grow stage, and how much effort you want to put in.
| Format | Effort | Good for | Example products to shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow-release tablets | Lowest | First-time growers, 1–4 plants, no scale or pH pen | Easy Grow Tablets, Easy Bloom Booster Tablets, Easy Combo Booster Pack 3 or 5 |
| Granular all-in-one | Low | Soil growers who want to mix once and forget | Easy Boost Natural Nutrition, Total Care, Monster Bud Mix |
| Liquid base feed | Medium | Growers who check EC/pH, run 4+ plants | Bio Grow, Bio Bloom, Alga Grow, Alga Bloom, Terra Grow, All-in-One Liquid Monster Buds |
| Powder concentrate | Medium | Cost-per-litre shoppers, any medium | PowderFeeding Hybrids, Short Flowering, Long Flowering, Berkana |
| Boosters and additives | Higher | Growers chasing yield, resin or terpenes | Green Sensation, Bud Boost, Bloom Boost, PK 13-14 Monster Buds, Sugar Royal |
If this is your first indoor grow, buy a tablet kit or a granular mix. That's it. The people who ruin their first crop usually did it by overfeeding with a complicated liquid schedule, not by keeping it simple.
Start with your medium. Soil forgives a lot — organic feeds like Bio Grow, Bio Bloom and Alga Bloom buffer themselves and work with the microbes already in the substrate. Coco behaves like hydro: it holds nothing, so you feed every watering with a mineral base like Terra Grow or the All-in-One Liquid Monster Buds. Pure hydro setups want clean mineral inputs — PowderFeeding or Hydro Roots — because organic sludge clogs drippers.
Then pick by experience. Beginners: order an Easy Pack or a tablet set and don't add anything else for your first run. Intermediate growers running soil or coco: a two-part base (Bio Grow + Bio Bloom, or Alga Grow + Alga Bloom) plus one bloom booster like Green Sensation covers 90% of what a grow needs. Advanced growers already know they want a PK 13-14, an enzyme, a terpene enhancer and a calmag on the side — shop the Monster Bud Boost Pack or Plagron's full Top Grow Box.
When in doubt, buy less stuff. A clean schedule with three products beats a shelf of twelve bottles you half-understand.
Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (the NPK on the label) plus calcium, magnesium, sulphur and six or so micronutrients (iron, manganese, zinc, boron, copper, molybdenum). Any complete base feed like Bio Grow, Terra Grow or PowderFeeding Hybrids covers all of these — you don't need to buy them separately.
Organic (Bio Grow, Alga Bloom, Total Care) feeds soil microbes and produces tastier end-product, but works slower and only in living soil. Mineral (PowderFeeding, Terra Grow, Monster Buds liquid) is faster, cleaner in hydro and coco, and easier to dose precisely. Most growers pick one lane and stick with it.
Not for a healthy soil grow with a decent bloom base — Bio Bloom or Alga Bloom already contains plenty of phosphorus and potassium. You'll notice the difference from adding Green Sensation, Bud Boost or PK 13-14 Monster Buds in weeks 4–6 of flower, when the plant's demand spikes. Skip it on your first grow.
Get a tablet kit. Easy Combo Booster Pack 5 from Royal Queen Seeds gives you two veg tablets and three bloom tablets — drop them in the soil, water as normal, done. No measuring, no pH pen, no mid-cycle panic. Easy Boost Natural Nutrition does the same job as pellets mixed into the soil.
Some yes, most no. PowderFeeding Hybrids, PowderFeeding Short Flowering and PowderFeeding Long Flowering are designed to work across all three mediums, which is why they sell well. Liquid organics like Bio Grow are soil-only. Check the label — it'll say "Terra", "Coco", "Hydro" or "all media".
In soil with organic feeds, usually no — the soil buffers itself. In coco or hydro, yes. Grab the Terra Aquatica Liquid pH Test Kit (no batteries, lasts about 1,000 tests) and a bottle of pH- Monster Buds to bring tap water down into the 5.5–6.5 range where roots absorb properly.
