Downstem with Diffuser (Slits) 14mm
A diffuser downstem is a glass tube with slits at the bottom that breaks your smoke into smaller bubbles as it passes through water, giving you cooler, smoother hits. This SG14 (14.5mm) downstem fits any bong or water pipe with a standard 14.5mm ground joint and comes in 5 lengths from 115mm to 165mm. Made from clear, unbranded borosilicate glass with 6 precision-cut slits at the base, it's one of those small upgrades that makes a noticeable difference the moment you take your first pull.
Which Length Do You Need?
The right downstem length depends on your bong, not your preferences. You want the slits sitting roughly 1cm above the bottom of your water chamber — close enough to submerge fully, but not so long it touches the base and restricts airflow. Here's how to measure:
- Slide a pencil into your bong's joint opening until it reaches about 1cm from the bottom of the water chamber.
- Mark where the pencil meets the inside wall of the bong (where the joint ends internally).
- Measure from that mark to the tip of the pencil — that's your target downstem length.
- If you measure to the outside edge of the joint instead, subtract about 2.5cm (the average length of a ground glass joint).
Lengths are measured from the top edge of the lower ground joint to the bottom of the tube. Pick the range that matches your measurement:
| Variant | Length Range | SKU |
|---|---|---|
| Extra Short | 115–125mm | HS0917 |
| Short | 125–135mm | HS0918 |
| Medium | 135–145mm | HS0919 |
| Medium-Long | 145–155mm | HS0920 |
| Long | 155–165mm | HS0921 |
If you're between two sizes, go shorter. A downstem that's a touch too short still works — the slits just sit slightly higher in the water. One that's too long hits the bottom of your bong and either won't seat properly or risks cracking the base. We've seen it happen more than once.

Complete your setup with an SG14 glass bowl if you need a fresh one, or grab a set of carbon filters for even cleaner hits. If your bong uses SG18 (18.8mm) joints instead, check our 18mm downstems — same diffuser design, wider grind.
Why a Diffuser Downstem Makes a Real Difference
A standard open-ended downstem dumps smoke into the water as one big blob. It cools things down a bit, sure, but the filtration is minimal. A diffuser downstem with 6 slits forces that same smoke through half a dozen narrow openings, splitting it into smaller bubbles. More bubbles means more surface area in contact with water, which means more cooling and more particulate filtration before anything reaches your lungs.
The practical result? Noticeably smoother hits. Less throat burn. Less coughing. You can actually taste what you're smoking rather than just feeling the heat. It's one of the cheapest upgrades you can make to a glass bong, and honestly, once you've used a slitted diffuser, going back to an open downstem feels rough.
The one thing to watch out for: diffuser downstems create slightly more drag than open-ended ones. Those 6 slits add a tiny bit of resistance when you pull. For most people this is barely noticeable — some actually prefer it because it slows the draw and gives you more control. But if you're using a very small bong with limited water volume, you might feel the difference. For anything medium-sized or larger, it's a non-issue.
How to Use Your Diffuser Downstem
- Remove your old downstem from the bong (twist gently if it's stuck — never force glass).
- Slide the new diffuser downstem into the SG14 joint on your bong. It should sit snugly in the ground glass joint without wobbling.
- Fill your bong with water until the 6 slits at the bottom of the downstem are fully submerged — roughly 1–2cm of water above the slits is the sweet spot.
- Place your SG14 bowl on top of the downstem.
- Test with a dry pull (no flame). You should hear a gentle bubbling through all 6 slits. If you hear one loud gurgle instead, add a touch more water.
- Pack your bowl, light up, and enjoy noticeably smoother hits.
Cleaning tip: soak the downstem in isopropyl alcohol (90%+) and coarse salt for 20–30 minutes, then rinse with warm water. The slits can collect resin buildup over time, which reduces diffusion. A weekly clean keeps those 6 openings working properly. A pipe cleaner or cotton bud helps clear stubborn residue from inside the tube.
