Complete your setup with a proper 14mm bong or water pipe. If your current piece uses an 18mm joint, grab an 18mm-to-14mm adapter so this bowl fits snugly. A set of pipe cleaners and some isopropyl alcohol will keep the beer mug looking freshly poured rather than last-night's-dregs.
Why This Beer Mug Bowl Earns Its Spot on Your Shelf
Most replacement bowls are functional but forgettable — plain funnels in clear or black glass. They do the job. Nothing wrong with that. But if you're going to have a piece sitting out on the table, it might as well make someone do a double take. The Beer Mug Bowl from Empire Glassworks does exactly that: it looks like a tiny pint of golden lager, complete with a frothy head and the kind of detail you only get from lampworked glass.
Empire Glassworks build everything by hand in their California workshop. Each piece gets individually shaped and coloured using borosilicate glass rods over a torch flame — the same material used in lab equipment, which means it handles heat without cracking the way soda-lime glass tends to. You can feel the density when you pick it up: 50 grams in something this small gives it a solid, reassuring weight. The sandblasted Empire logo on the base is a nice finishing touch — subtle, not stamped on like an afterthought.
The honest limitation? It's a novelty shape, so the bowl opening is slightly narrower than a standard cone piece. You won't be packing massive loads in here. For solo sessions or small groups, that's actually a plus — you get a clean, single-hit snap rather than a half-burnt bowl sitting around. For party-sized packs, keep a standard funnel bowl on hand as backup.
How to Use the Beer Mug Bowl
- Check your water pipe's joint — this bowl requires a 14mm female joint. If you see a number etched near the joint or the opening is roughly the diameter of a penny, you're in the right territory.
- Slide the 14mm male fitting of the Beer Mug Bowl into your bong's female joint. It should sit snug without wobbling. If it feels loose, your piece likely has an 18mm joint — you'll need a reducer adapter.
- Grind your herb to a medium consistency. Too fine and it pulls through; too coarse and airflow suffers. A 2-piece grinder works well for this size bowl.
- Pack the bowl lightly — don't press down hard. You want air to move through the material. Fill to just below the rim of the mug shape, roughly 0.1–0.15g for a single hit.
- Light the edge of the bowl (corner lighting), not the centre. This preserves the rest of the pack for the next hit and gives you better flavour on each pull.
- After your session, let the bowl cool for a minute, then tap out the ash. A quick rinse with warm water keeps residue from building up. For a deeper clean, soak in isopropyl alcohol for 15–20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
