Buy Mushroom Grow Bags — The Azarius Guide

A grow bag is the single most-used piece of kit in home mushroom cultivation. Sterile, autoclavable, fitted with micro-porous filter patches that let CO2 out and keep contaminants out — that's the job. We carry two families: ready-to-grow bags that arrive pre-inoculated with Golden Teacher spores and colonised substrate, and empty spawn/substrate bags for growers who want to run their own sterilisation and inoculation.

If you're new to this and want mushrooms on your shelf in 2–3 weeks without owning a pressure cooker, grab a Filter Box or Filter Bag — they ship fully loaded with 2 kg of colonised substrate and live Psilocybe cubensis spores, so you just add light and fresh air. If you're further along and mixing your own grain and bulk substrate, order the Mushroom Spawn Bag with Injection Port or the Filter Bag XL for 2100 ml kits.

Grow Bag Comparison — Which One to Buy

Bag typeComes withGood for
Filter Box / Filter Bag (Ready-2-Grow)2 kg colonised substrate + Golden Teacher sporesFirst-time buyers who want to skip sterilisation
Filter Bag XLEmpty bag, 4 filter strips, fits 2100 ml kitsGrowers running sterilised substrate kits
Mushroom Spawn Bag with Injection Port (T4 / T10)3.0 mil polypropylene, Tyvek filter, self-healing portGrain spawn runs, liquid culture inoculation
Sterilised Substrate KitPre-sterilised bulk substrate, sealed, injection-readyIntermediate growers skipping the pressure cooker

Choosing by workflow is simpler than choosing by size: if you're inoculating, buy a spawn bag with a port. If you want to grow without inoculating, buy a ready-to-grow filter bag. If you're fruiting bulk, buy Filter Bag XL plus a Sterilised Substrate Kit.

How to Choose Your Mushroom Grow Bag

Beginners: buy a Filter Box or Filter Bag. They're pre-inoculated, sealed, and require zero sterile technique. Open the box, follow the fresh-air exchange routine, harvest. Honestly, if it's your first grow, don't overthink it — the Ready-2-Grow route exists because PF-Tek and pressure cookers eat weekends.

Intermediate: you've done a kit, you want more control. Order a Sterilised Substrate Kit and pair it with a Filter Bag XL, or run grain spawn in a Mushroom Spawn Bag with Injection Port. The self-healing injection port is where this gets fun — inject your spore syringe or liquid culture, no needle holes to tape up.

Advanced: you're working from agar, making your own liquid cultures, mixing grain and bulk. Shop the T10 Unicorn Bags with 0.2 micron Tyvek filters, Duran screw-top bottles for agar pours, and Erlenmeyer flasks for liquid culture. When in doubt, start with a Filter Bag and work backwards from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a filter bag and a spawn bag?

A filter bag (like the Filter Box) usually arrives pre-inoculated and colonised — you just fruit it. A spawn bag is empty, autoclavable, and fitted with an injection port so you can sterilise your own grain or substrate and inoculate it yourself. Buy the first if you want mushrooms fast, the second if you want control.

Can I reuse a mushroom grow bag?

No. Polypropylene grow bags are single-use. After harvest the filter patches are loaded with spores and microbes, and the bag itself has been stretched and handled. Order fresh bags for each run — they're cheap compared to losing a grow to contamination.

What size grow bag should I buy for my first grow?

For a first grow, get a Filter Box or Filter Bag in the 1000–1200 ml range. That's enough substrate for a meaningful harvest (up to 500 g fresh) without being so large that fresh-air exchange becomes a chore. Smaller volumes dry out faster; larger bags need more attention.

Do I need a pressure cooker to use these bags?

Only if you're buying empty bags. The Filter Box, Filter Bag and Sterilised Substrate Kit all arrive pre-sterilised and ready to go. The Mushroom Spawn Bag with Injection Port and Filter Bag XL are autoclavable — you fill, seal, and pressure-cook them yourself at 15 PSI for 90 minutes.

How long does colonisation take in a grow bag?

For a pre-inoculated Filter Bag with Golden Teacher, colonisation is already done when it ships — first pins appear within 2–3 weeks of opening. For self-inoculated spawn bags, expect 10–21 days of grain colonisation at 24–26°C before you mix into bulk substrate.
