Magic Mushroom Grow Guide

Step1Step 1

Take off the lid: Carefully remove the lid from the grow kit. Ensure your hands are clean to avoid contamination. It's a good idea to wash your hands thoroughly or wear sterile gloves.

Fill with Water: Fill the grow kit with water until it is completely full. Use clean, cold water to fill the kit, ensuring the substrate is fully submerged.

Put the Lid Back On: After filling the grow kit with water, securely put the lid back on to ensure no water escapes during the soaking period.

Step2Step 2

Allow the grow kit to soak for 9-12 hours: This soaking period is crucial for rehydrating the substrate. It's best to start this process in the evening so the kit can soak overnight.

Cold Spot Soaking: Ideally, place the grow kit in the fridge to maintain a consistent and cool environment during soaking. Ensure the temperature in the fridge is between 2-8°C (35-46°F).

Drain Excess Water: After the soaking period, drain all excess water from the kit. Make sure the substrate is moist but not waterlogged.

Rinse the Lid: Take the lid off and rinse it under running water. Clean the lid thoroughly and keep it aside for future use, as it will be needed for the next flush.

Step3Step 3

Fill with Water: Fill the grow bag with 150ml of water. This water will help maintain humidity inside the bag. It's important to use clean water to prevent introducing any contaminants.

Place the Grow Kit Inside the Bag: Carefully place the grow kit inside the bag with the water. Ensure the kit is stable and the water is evenly distributed at the bottom.

Spray the Inner Sides of the Bag: During setup, spray water on the inner sides of the bag just once. This initial spray helps to create a humid environment, essential for the growth process.

Step4Step 4

Maintaining Humidity: Maintaining the correct humidity level is crucial. The ideal relative humidity is between 85% and 100%. Use a hygrometer to monitor the humidity inside the bag and adjust as necessary.

Fold the Top of the Bag: Fold the top of the grow bag over twice, about 3 cm each time. This helps to secure the bag and create a controlled environment.

Secure with Paperclips: Use paperclips to secure the folded top of the bag. This ensures the bag remains closed but can be easily opened for ventilation.

Step5Step 5

Ideal Placement: Put the bag in a well-lit area that stays warm, ideally between 23-27°C (73-81°F). Ensure the bag receives indirect sunlight to prevent overheating. A location near a window with filtered light is ideal, but avoid direct sunlight as it can dry out the substrate and overheat the grow kit.

Step6Step 6

Monitoring Pins: When the first pins (small mushroom buds) appear, it indicates that the mushrooms are starting to grow. This usually occurs within 1-2 weeks, depending on the strain and conditions.

Daily Air Exchange: Open the bag 1-3 times a day to refresh the air. Mushrooms need oxygen to grow properly, so regular fresh air exchange is necessary. This also helps remove any buildup of CO2 inside the bag.

Step7Step 7

Ready to Harvest: In 2-4 weeks, your mushrooms will be ready to harvest. Monitor their growth closely to determine the optimal harvest time.

Harvest All Mushrooms: Collect all mushrooms, even the smallest ones, just before the veils under the caps begin to tear. This step is crucial to ensure you harvest them at the right stage. Use a clean, sharp knife or scissors to cut the mushrooms at the base.

Handling: Handle the mushrooms gently during harvest to avoid damaging them. Use clean hands or gloves to maintain hygiene.

Step8Step 8

Soak for Next Flush: After harvesting, soak the grow kit again to prepare it for another flush. Follow the initial soaking process to rehydrate the substrate.

Repeat Steps: Follow these 8 steps again to cultivate additional flushes. This grow kit can produce up to three flushes, allowing for multiple harvests.

DryingMethods

Drying Methods

After harvesting your mushrooms, drying them properly is essential for long-term storage. Here are some effective drying methods:

Air Drying: Spread the mushrooms on a clean drying rack or paper towel in a cool, dark place with good air circulation. This method can take several days, and the mushrooms should be turned regularly to ensure even drying.

Using a Food Dehydrator: Place the mushrooms on the dehydrator trays, ensuring they are not touching each other. Set the dehydrator to a low temperature (35-45°C or 95-113°F) and dry for 6-12 hours, checking periodically until they are cracker-dry.

Oven Drying: Place the mushrooms on a baking sheet and set the oven to the lowest possible temperature (preferably below 50°C or 122°F). Leave the oven door slightly open to allow moisture to escape. Check the mushrooms frequently and turn them to ensure even drying.

Silica Gel Desiccant: Place the mushrooms in an airtight container with silica gel packets. The silica gel will absorb the moisture from the mushrooms. This method is best used after partial drying with one of the methods above.

Properly dried mushrooms should be cracker-dry and snap easily. Store them in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to maintain potency.

StorageTips

Storage Tips

Proper storage of dried mushrooms ensures they retain their potency and remain safe for consumption. Follow these tips for optimal storage:

Airtight Containers: Store dried mushrooms in airtight containers such as glass jars with tight-fitting lids or vacuum-sealed bags to prevent exposure to air and moisture.

Cool, Dark Place: Keep the containers in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cupboard, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Excessive light and heat can degrade the potency of the mushrooms.

Silica Gel Packs: Adding silica gel packs to the storage container can help absorb any residual moisture and keep the mushrooms dry.

Freezing: For long-term storage, consider freezing the dried mushrooms. Place them in airtight, freezer-safe containers or vacuum-sealed bags. Freezing can help preserve the mushrooms' potency for an extended period.

Labeling: Label the storage containers with the date of drying and the type of mushroom to keep track of freshness and potency.

ContaminationSigns

Contamination Signs

Identifying contamination early is crucial to ensure a healthy mushroom crop. Here are some signs to watch for:

Discoloration: Look for any unusual colors on the substrate or mushrooms, such as green, blue, black, or pink. These colors can indicate mold or bacterial contamination.

Foul Odors: Healthy mushroom kits typically have a neutral, earthy smell. If you detect any sour, sweet, or otherwise unpleasant odors, it may indicate contamination.

Slime or Wet Spots: Excessive moisture or slimy textures on the substrate or mushrooms can be a sign of bacterial contamination.

Unusual Growth: Any abnormal growth patterns, such as fuzzy, cotton-like patches that are not mycelium, can indicate mold contamination.

If you notice any of these signs, it is essential to isolate the contaminated kit from any other kits to prevent the spread of contamination. In some cases, it may be necessary to dispose of the contaminated kit entirely to protect your other crops.

GrowingTips

Growing Tips

For successful cultivation of magic mushrooms, consider these additional growing tips:

Cleanliness: Always wash your hands and use sterile gloves when handling the grow kit and mushrooms to prevent contamination.

Consistent Environment: Maintain a stable temperature and humidity level throughout the growing process. Avoid drastic changes in the environment, as this can stress the mushrooms.

Indirect Light: Provide indirect light for the mushrooms. Direct sunlight can be too harsh and cause the substrate to dry out.

Monitor Growth: Regularly check on your mushrooms to monitor their growth and ensure conditions remain optimal. Adjust humidity and temperature as needed.

Patience: Growing mushrooms can take time. Be patient and avoid rushing the process. Proper care and attention will yield the best results.

Fresh Air Exchange: Regularly ventilate the grow bag to ensure your mushrooms receive enough oxygen and to prevent CO2 buildup.

Hydration: Ensure the substrate remains moist but not waterlogged. Proper hydration is crucial for healthy mushroom growth.

Labeling and Tracking: Keep a journal or log to track the growth progress, environmental conditions, and any adjustments you make. This can help you refine your growing technique over time.
