We get asked this a lot in the shop: why buy a spore syringe instead of just getting a ready-to-grow kit? Fair question. A pre-colonised grow kit is the fastest route — open the box, add water, wait. But a spore syringe gives you something a grow kit can't: choice. You pick the substrate, you control the conditions, and you learn the full cultivation process from inoculation to harvest. If you're serious about growing Psilocybe cubensis long-term, starting with spores teaches you skills that make every future grow better.

Why Moby Dick over the dozens of other cubensis strains out there? Two reasons. First, it's forgiving. The Golden Teacher genetics mean this strain tolerates the kind of small mistakes that beginners inevitably make — a degree or two off on temperature, slightly imperfect sterile technique, a fruiting chamber that's not dialled in perfectly. You'll still get mushrooms. Second, the effects are worth the effort. Moby Dick produces an experience that's both reflective and physical — the kind of session where you find yourself staring at tree bark for 20 minutes and genuinely learning something from it. The one thing to keep in mind: a spore syringe is not a shortcut. You still need a grow kit or properly prepared substrate, sterile technique, and patience. If you skip the sterile steps, you'll grow mould instead of mushrooms. We've seen it hundreds of times over 25 years. The alcohol swab included in the kit is a start, but proper sterile technique means working in a still-air environment, flame-sterilising your needle, and keeping your hands off anything that touches the substrate.

How to Use the Mondo Moby Dick Spore Syringe

1. Prepare your workspace. Turn off fans and air conditioning. Close windows. You want still air — every breeze carries contaminants. A still air box (a plastic tub with arm holes) is the best budget option.
2. Wash your hands thoroughly, then put on clean gloves. Wipe down all surfaces with isopropyl alcohol.
3. Remove the spore syringe from its packaging. Attach the hypodermic needle to the syringe. Heat the needle tip with a lighter until it glows red, then let it cool for 10-15 seconds. Do not blow on it — your breath carries bacteria.
4. Use the included alcohol swab to wipe the injection port on your grow kit or the inoculation point on your grain jar.
5. Shake the syringe gently for 10 seconds to distribute the spores evenly through the solution. You should see small dark clumps moving through the liquid — those are your spore clusters.
6. Inject 3-5ml of spore solution into each grow kit, or 1-2ml into each grain jar. Insert the needle about 2-3cm and inject slowly.
7. Seal the injection point with micropore tape if your container doesn't have a self-healing port.
8. Place the inoculated substrate in a warm spot at around 28°C. A heating mat with a thermostat works best. Avoid direct sunlight.
9. Wait 10-14 days for full colonisation. You'll see white mycelium spreading through the substrate. Do not open the container during this phase.
10. Once fully colonised, move to fruiting conditions: 18-26°C, indirect light, and high humidity (90%+). Mist the walls of your fruiting chamber — not the substrate directly — twice daily.
11. Harvest mushrooms just before or as the veil beneath the cap begins to tear. Twist and pull gently at the base. After harvesting, soak the substrate in cold water for 12 hours to rehydrate, then return to fruiting conditions for the next flush. Expect 3-5 flushes total.
