Storage and Shelf Life
Mexicana truffles arrive vacuum-sealed and should go straight into the fridge at 2–4 °C. Unopened, they'll keep for several weeks — check the best-before date on the pack. Once you break the seal, use them within 48 hours. The vacuum packaging keeps contamination out and freshness in, but once air gets to them, they start to degrade.
Don't freeze them. Freezing damages the cell structure of the sclerotia and can make the texture unpleasantly mushy when thawed. The fridge is all you need.
How to Take Mexicana Truffles
- Eat lightly beforehand — a mostly empty stomach speeds up onset and reduces nausea. A small meal 2 to 3 hours before is fine. A full Sunday roast 30 minutes before is not.
- Weigh your dose. A kitchen scale accurate to 1 g is enough. For your first time, 10 g is the sweet spot — two-thirds of the pack.
- Chew thoroughly. The more you break down the sclerotia in your mouth, the faster your body absorbs the psilocybin. Washing them down with orange juice or ginger tea helps with the taste and may settle your stomach.
- Find a comfortable setting. Your living room, a quiet park, a friend's garden — somewhere you feel safe and relaxed. Have water, snacks, and music ready.
- Wait. Onset takes 30 to 60 minutes. Do not redose before the 90-minute mark. We cannot stress this enough.
- Let it unfold. The peak usually arrives around 60 to 90 minutes in and lasts 1 to 2 hours. Total duration is 3 to 5 hours. You'll feel gradually more normal as the afternoon goes on.

Practical translation: don't take Mexicana truffles on a day when you're stressed, anxious, or in a rush. Pick a free afternoon. Be with people you trust — or alone if you prefer your own company. Have a "sitter" available, even if it's just someone a phone call away who knows what you're doing. Mexicana is mild, but your mindset still shapes the experience.
Safety and Interactions
Psilocybin interacts with serotonin receptors, which means it can interact with other substances that affect the same system. According to a review in Psychopharmacology, the use of psilocybin has been associated with transient sympathomimetic effects including mild increases in heart rate and blood pressure (Becker et al., 2023). These effects are generally mild and resolve after the experience ends.
Do not combine Mexicana truffles with SSRIs, MAOIs, lithium, or other serotonergic medications. The interaction between psilocybin and SSRIs can either blunt the effects unpredictably or, in the case of MAOIs, intensify them dangerously.
