McKennaii Magic Mushroom Grow Kit — The Strongest Cubensis in the Azarius Range

The McKennaii magic mushroom grow kit is a fully colonised Psilocybe cubensis cultivation set that produces the most potent cubensis strain we carry — rated 5/5 strength, with dense fruits measuring 0.6–0.8% psilocybin by dry weight. Named after ethnobotanist Terence McKenna, the man who told a generation to "take five dried grams in silent darkness," this strain genuinely earns the association. If you've already grown Golden Teacher or B+ and you want something that pushes back, McKennaii is where our grow kit range tops out for cubensis potency.

5/5 Potency Rating 1,200 ml Rye-Grain Substrate Up to 3 Flushes 300–600 g Fresh Yield Fully Colonised — Ready to Grow

What You Get Inside the McKennaii Grow Kit

Every McKennaii magic mushroom grow kit ships with the same components as the rest of the Azarius grow kit lineup — the difference is what's colonised inside. Here's the full breakdown:

Spec Value
Species Psilocybe cubensis (McKennaii strain)
Substrate 1,200 ml fully colonised rye grain
Casing layer Perlite and vermiculite
Included accessories Humidity bag, paperclip
Potency rating 5/5 (strongest cubensis in Azarius range)
Psilocybin content (dry) 0.6–0.8%
Expected flushes Up to 3
Total yield (fresh) 300–600 g
First flush timeline 1–3 weeks after setup
Optimal fruiting temp 23–25 °C

The substrate arrives fully colonised — white mycelium running through the rye grain, ready to fruit. No inoculation, no waiting for colonisation, no sterile technique needed at that stage. You open the box, follow the instructions, and the first pins typically appear within 7–14 days.

Why McKennaii Sits at the Top of Our Cubensis Range

We've stocked McKennaii magic mushroom grow kits at Azarius since the early 2000s. Over that time, we've watched thousands of growers follow the same progression: Golden Teacher first (solid, forgiving, 3/5 potency), then B+ or Cambodian for a bit more intensity, and finally McKennaii when they want the strongest cubensis experience a grow kit can deliver.

The difference isn't subtle. A 2005 study published in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology measured Psilocybe cubensis alkaloid content across strains at 0.5–0.8% dry weight. McKennaii consistently lands at the upper end of that range — 0.6–0.8% psilocybin — which means gram-for-gram, you're getting meaningfully more active compound than a Golden Teacher (typically 0.5–0.6%). According to a study in Molecules (PMC11856550), preclinical research has shown more pronounced effects from psilocybin-containing mushroom extracts than from isolated psilocybin alone, supporting the idea that the full alkaloid profile of the fruit matters.

The fruits themselves are distinctive: thick stems, caramel-coloured caps that darken as they mature, and a dense, meaty texture when you pick them. They're not the tallest mushrooms you'll grow — McKennaii tends to produce stocky, compact fruits rather than the leggy specimens you get from Colombian or Thai strains. But what they lack in height, they make up for in concentration.

McKennaii vs. Golden Teacher — Which Grow Kit Should You Pick?

This is the question we answer most often in the shop. Here's the straightforward comparison:

Feature McKennaii Golden Teacher
Potency 5/5 (0.6–0.8% psilocybin dry) 3/5 (0.5–0.6% psilocybin dry)
Time to first pins 7–14 days 5–10 days
Total yield (fresh) 300–600 g 300–600 g
Flush count Up to 3 Up to 4
Fruit appearance Thick stems, caramel caps Golden caps, elegant stems
Contamination resistance Good Excellent
Best for Experienced growers wanting peak cubensis potency First-time growers, reliable all-rounder

If this is your first grow kit, start with Golden Teacher. Genuinely. It's more forgiving of temperature fluctuations, pins faster, and gives you an extra flush to learn the harvest-rehydrate cycle. McKennaii is where you go once you've got that process dialled in and want the strongest cubensis experience our range offers.

How to Grow Your McKennaii Magic Mushroom Grow Kit

The process is identical to every Azarius grow kit. The substrate is already colonised — you're just providing the conditions for fruiting. Always wash your hands thoroughly before handling the kit. Contamination from a single ungloved touch is still the number one reason grows fail.

  1. Remove the lid from the grow box. Rinse the lid — you'll use it later for rehydration.
  2. Fill the box with lukewarm water (20 °C), replace the lid, and soak for 1 hour. This activates the substrate.
  3. After soaking, drain excess water through a corner of the lid. Drain thoroughly — standing water breeds contamination.
  4. Place the grow box inside the humidity bag. Pour 150–200 ml of water into the bag (not into the box — into the bag around the box). This maintains humidity at the base.
  5. Fold the top of the bag twice and secure with the paperclip. Leave a small gap for air exchange — the mushrooms need fresh oxygen.
  6. Place the setup in a spot with indirect light and a stable temperature of 23–25 °C. Avoid direct sunlight and radiators.
  7. Mist the inside of the bag daily with a clean spray bottle. Open the bag, spray 2–3 times toward the walls (not directly onto the substrate), refold, and reclip.
  8. First pins should appear within 7–14 days. Once caps begin to open and the veil underneath starts to tear, it's harvest time. Don't wait until the caps flatten — harvest when the veil just begins to break for maximum potency.
  9. For subsequent flushes: fill the box with cold water, replace the lid, and soak for 12–24 hours. Drain and repeat from step 4.

The entire first flush cycle takes roughly 2–3 weeks from setup to harvest. Keep the environment clean, the temperature steady, and resist the urge to open the bag every hour to check. McKennaii rewards patience.

Potency, Alkaloid Content, and What the Research Says

McKennaii's reputation rests on measurable chemistry, not just folklore. Psilocybe cubensis strains vary in their psilocybin and psilocin concentrations, and McKennaii sits at the upper boundary of what's been documented for the species.

According to research published in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology (2005), Psilocybe cubensis alkaloid content ranges from 0.5–0.8% psilocybin by dry weight across strains. McKennaii consistently measures at 0.6–0.8%, placing it firmly in the top tier. A study cataloguing chemical composition of Psilocybe species (PMC12299699) included P. McKennaii in its analysis of whole-mushroom methanolic extracts, confirming its place among the more alkaloid-dense cubensis varieties.

According to research published in Neuropsychopharmacology (PMC11039401), rodent model studies have reported that psilocybin exposure influences behaviours related to memory, learning, and anxiety — though the researchers note that individual responses vary significantly with dose and context. A separate review in the Journal of Psychopharmacology (PMC8056712) found that survey data from experienced users suggests even highly challenging experiences can be associated with perceived benefits in retrospect, reinforcing the importance of preparation and setting rather than simply dose escalation.

What does this mean practically? McKennaii produces fruits where a lower fresh weight delivers a stronger effect compared to milder strains. If you're used to consuming 15 g fresh of Golden Teacher, do not start with 15 g fresh of McKennaii. Scale back and work from there.

Storage and Shelf Life

Your McKennaii magic mushroom grow kit arrives as a living organism — colonised mycelium on rye grain, ready to fruit. Treat it accordingly:

  • Start the kit within 3–5 days of delivery for best results. The mycelium is at peak vitality when it arrives.
  • If you can't start immediately, store the sealed kit in the fridge (2–8 °C) for up to 2 weeks. Beyond that, yields drop noticeably.
  • Never freeze the kit. Ice crystals destroy the mycelial network.
  • Once you've started the fruiting process, commit to it. Stopping and restarting mid-flush stresses the mycelium and reduces output.

Complete your McKennaii setup with a thermo-hygrometer to monitor temperature and humidity inside the bag — the two variables that make or break a flush. If you're growing in a cooler room, a heat mat keeps the substrate at the ideal 23–25 °C range without hot spots. And once you've harvested, a kitchen scale accurate to 0.1 g takes the guesswork out of weighing your dried fruits.

Set, Setting, and Harm Reduction

McKennaii is the strongest cubensis in our lineup, and that means preparation matters more than usual. According to research reviewed in Psychopharmacology (PMC10863370), interactions between psilocybin and serotonergic medications — particularly SSRIs and SNRIs — can alter the experience significantly due to receptor down-regulation from continuous antidepressant exposure. If you're taking any serotonergic medication, research the interaction thoroughly before proceeding.

Set and setting aren't optional extras — they're the difference between a profound experience and a difficult one. A quiet, familiar environment with a trusted sitter present is the baseline recommendation for any high-potency strain. An empty stomach (4+ hours fasted) gives more predictable onset timing, typically 30–60 minutes. Eating beforehand delays and muddles the onset, which is how people end up redosing too early.

We've been selling McKennaii for over 20 years. The growers who have the best outcomes are the ones who respect the potency, prepare their environment, and don't treat it like a casual afternoon activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How strong is the McKennaii grow kit compared to other Azarius grow kits?

McKennaii is rated 5/5 potency — the strongest Psilocybe cubensis in our range. It contains 0.6–0.8% psilocybin by dry weight, compared to 0.5–0.6% for Golden Teacher (rated 3/5). The difference is noticeable gram-for-gram, so adjust your quantities accordingly if you're moving up from a milder strain.

How much yield can I expect from a McKennaii magic mushroom grow kit?

Total yield across up to 3 flushes is 300–600 g fresh. The first flush is usually the largest, producing roughly 60–70% of total output. Proper rehydration between flushes (12–24 hours cold water soak) is critical for getting decent second and third harvests.

Why is my McKennaii grow kit taking longer to pin than Golden Teacher?

McKennaii typically takes 7–14 days to show first pins, compared to 5–10 days for Golden Teacher. This is normal strain behaviour, not a sign of contamination. Keep the temperature at 23–25 °C, maintain humidity, and wait. We get this question weekly — it almost always resolves on its own.

When should I harvest McKennaii mushrooms?

Harvest when the veil underneath the cap just begins to tear. Don't wait for the caps to flatten completely — psilocybin content peaks right at veil break. Twist and pull each fruit gently from the substrate, or cut at the base with a clean blade.

Can I store the McKennaii grow kit before starting it?

Yes — store the sealed kit in the fridge at 2–8 °C for up to 2 weeks. Beyond that, mycelium vitality drops and yields suffer. Never freeze the kit. For best results, start within 3–5 days of delivery.

Is McKennaii a good grow kit for beginners?

We'd recommend starting with Golden Teacher or B+ instead. McKennaii is the same difficulty to grow, but its higher potency means dosing mistakes have bigger consequences. Get one or two successful grows under your belt first, then move to McKennaii when you're comfortable with the full harvest-rehydrate-reflush cycle.

How do I rehydrate the McKennaii kit between flushes?

After harvesting all fruits from a flush, fill the grow box with cold tap water, replace the lid, and soak for 12–24 hours. Drain thoroughly, then return the box to the humidity bag and resume misting. Second flush pins usually appear within 5–10 days of rehydration.

What temperature does the McKennaii grow kit need?

Optimal fruiting temperature is 23–25 °C. Below 20 °C, pinning slows dramatically or stalls. Above 28 °C, you risk bacterial contamination. A heat mat underneath the kit helps if your room runs cool, but place a towel between the mat and the box to avoid hot spots on the substrate.
