How to Grow the Cambodia Kit — Step by Step

The Cambodia grow kit arrives fully colonised, so there's no inoculation, no waiting for jars to colonise, no grain-to-grain transfers. You open the box and start fruiting. Here's the process from unboxing to harvest.

1. Clean your workspace. Wash your hands thoroughly. Wipe down the surface you'll be working on. Cambodia colonises fast, but an ungloved hand is still the number-one contamination source we see — and we've seen a lot of them over 25 years.
2. Open the kit and remove the lid. Fill the grow box with lukewarm water (20–25 °C), replace the lid, and soak for 12 hours. This rehydrates the rye cake and triggers the fruiting cycle.
3. Drain the excess water. After 12 hours, carefully pour off all standing water. The substrate should be saturated but not swimming.
4. Place the kit inside the humidity grow bag. Position the open grow box inside the supplied bag. Add approximately 200 ml of water to the bottom of the bag — this creates the humid microclimate the mycelium needs to pin.
5. Fold and close the bag. Use the polyfill-filtered air strips or paperclips to seal the top. The polyfill allows gas exchange while maintaining humidity above 90%.
6. Place in indirect light at 23–25 °C. No direct sunlight — a shelf near a window or a room with ambient daylight works well. Cambodia doesn't need a specific light cycle, but 12 hours of indirect light per day encourages even pinning across the surface.
7. Mist daily. Open the bag once or twice a day and mist the inside walls of the bag (not the substrate directly) with clean water. Fan gently for 30 seconds to refresh the air, then reseal.
8. Harvest when the veils begin to tear. Cambodia fruits grow quickly once they pin. Pick them just as the thin membrane beneath the cap starts to separate from the stem — this is peak potency. Twist and pull gently at the base. Don't wait until the caps flatten and drop spores; a spore-coated cake is harder to rehydrate for the next flush.
9. Rehydrate for the next flush. After harvesting, fill the box with water again, soak for 12 hours, drain, and return to the bag. Most Cambodia kits produce 2–3 flushes, with the first flush typically being the largest.

Storage and Shelf Life

If you need to delay, store the unopened kit in the fridge at 2–8 °C for up to 2 weeks. Don't freeze it — ice crystals rupture cell walls and kill the mycelium.

Once harvested, fresh mushrooms keep for about 5–7 days in the fridge in a paper bag (not plastic — they'll go slimy). For long-term storage, dry them thoroughly with a food dehydrator or desiccant until they snap cleanly when bent. Properly dried and stored in an airtight container with a silica gel packet, they'll keep their potency for 6–12 months.
