Mascotte Brown Rolling Papers 1¼: Unbleached Dutch Papers Built for Flavour

Mascotte Brown Rolling Papers 1¼ are unbleached, slow-burning rolling papers made with natural Acacia gum by the Netherlands' longest-running rolling paper specialist. If you've ever rolled with a bright white paper and noticed a faint chemical taste creeping into your smoke, these exist to solve that problem. The brown, unrefined paper lets your herb do the talking — no chlorine bleach, no added chalk, nothing between you and the flavour you're actually after.

Mascotte has been producing rolling papers and smoking accessories in the Netherlands since 1855 — that's over 160 years of getting paper thickness, porosity, and burn rate right. The Brown line is their answer to the growing demand for papers that stay out of the way. Thin enough to let terpene profiles come through, sturdy enough that you're not patching tears mid-roll.

What Makes Mascotte Brown Papers Worth Reaching For

The 1¼ size sits in a sweet spot: wider than a standard single-wide but not as bulky as a king size. You get roughly 78mm x 44mm per leaf — enough room for a comfortable personal smoke without excess paper at the seam. Each booklet holds 50 leaves, so one pack keeps you sorted for weeks if you're not chain-rolling.

The unbleached paper stock is the real draw here. Mascotte skips the chlorine whitening process entirely, which means the fibres retain their natural brown colour and — more importantly — their neutral taste. The Acacia gum adhesive strip is plant-derived, sticks on the first lick, and doesn't leave a gummy residue on your lips. We've used papers where the gum line either refuses to seal or turns into a soggy mess; this one finds the middle ground.

Burn rate is noticeably slower than your average bleached paper. The slightly thicker, unprocessed fibres hold together longer, so your smoke lasts a few extra minutes rather than racing down to a roach in 90 seconds. If you tend to roll and set your smoke down between puffs, that slower burn means less waste sitting in the ashtray.

Honest Limitations — What to Watch Out For

The 1¼ format is a personal-sized paper. If you're rolling for a group or prefer longer sessions, you'll want to step up to a king size. Mascotte makes a Brown King Size as well, so you're not switching brands — just grabbing a bigger booklet.

Because the paper is unbleached and slightly thicker than ultra-thin rice papers, it does have a touch more presence in the smoke than, say, a transparent cellulose paper. It's minimal, but if you're the type who obsesses over the absolute thinnest paper on the market, know that these prioritise burn consistency over sheer translucency. For most people, the trade-off is well worth it — a paper that actually holds together while you roll beats one that tears if you look at it wrong.

Complete your rolling setup with Mascotte Brown filter tips for a matching unbleached experience from end to end. A decent grinder helps too — evenly ground herb rolls tighter, burns more evenly, and wastes less. Check our grinder range if yours has seen better days.

Why Unbleached Rolling Papers Matter for Your Smoke

Standard white rolling papers go through a chlorine or calcium carbonate bleaching process to get that clean look. The cosmetic result is fine, but it adds trace chemicals to the paper that can subtly alter the taste of your smoke. You might not notice it with heavy tobacco blends, but if you're smoking lighter herbal mixes or high-quality flower, that interference adds up.

Unbleached papers like the Mascotte Brown skip that step entirely. The result is a paper that tastes of almost nothing — just a faint, neutral warmth from the natural plant fibres. We've had customers switch from bleached to unbleached and immediately notice flavours they'd been missing. It's a small change that makes a surprisingly obvious difference, especially if you've invested in decent herb.

There's also the practical angle: fewer processing chemicals means fewer variables in the burn. Bleached papers can burn unevenly if the chemical treatment isn't perfectly uniform across the sheet. Unbleached papers tend to be more consistent because the fibre structure hasn't been chemically altered. That's why the Mascotte Brown burns so steadily — the paper is doing what paper naturally does, without interference.

How to Roll with Mascotte Brown 1¼ Papers

  1. Grind your herb to a medium consistency — not powder-fine, not chunky. You want airflow through the roll without loose bits falling through.
  2. Pull a single leaf from the booklet. The Acacia gum strip should face you, sticky side up, along the top edge.
  3. Create a filter tip from card stock or use a pre-made Mascotte filter tip. Place it at one end of the paper.
  4. Distribute your ground herb evenly along the paper's crease, tapering slightly toward the filter end for a cone shape — or keeping it uniform if you prefer a straight roll.
  5. Pinch the paper between your thumbs and index fingers. Roll the front edge back and forth to shape the herb into a cylinder.
  6. Tuck the front edge of the paper over the herb and behind the back edge. Start tucking from the filter end — it gives you an anchor point.
  7. Roll upward, lick the Acacia gum strip lightly, and seal. One pass is enough; the gum grips quickly.
  8. Pack the open end gently with a pen or similar tool, twist the tip closed, and you're done.

Mascotte Brown 1¼ vs King Size — Which Size Do You Need

The 1¼ is your everyday personal paper. It holds roughly 0.5–0.75g of ground herb comfortably, which is plenty for a solo session or a quick smoke. If you're rolling for two or prefer longer, fatter rolls, the Brown King Size gives you about 108mm of length to work with — roughly 30mm more than the 1¼.

Both use the same unbleached paper stock and Acacia gum, so flavour and burn rate are identical — it's purely a size decision. We'd say start with the 1¼ if you mostly smoke alone. You can always grab the King Size for weekends or social occasions.
