Dragon Set Shisha Heat Management
The Dragon Set is a heat management device for shisha that uses just three natural coals to regulate temperature across your tobacco bowl. Made by El Badia, it sits on top of your hookah bowl and distributes heat evenly — so you get a longer, smoother session without the constant fiddling that loose coals demand. If you've ever scorched a bowl of premium tobacco because a coal shifted, this is the fix.
Why the Dragon Set Beats Loose Coals on Your Shisha
Loose coals on foil work — nobody's arguing that. But they're fiddly. You're rotating them every 5–10 minutes, adjusting airflow by poking holes, and still ending up with hot spots that char one side of the tobacco while the other side barely heats. The Dragon Set eliminates most of that hassle. Three natural coals slot into the device, which then sits over your bowl and spreads heat across the entire surface. The result is a noticeably softer draw and more fragrant smoke, because the tobacco heats at a consistent temperature rather than getting blasted from one angle.
We've had customers come back saying their shisha sessions went from 30–40 minutes to well over an hour with the same amount of tobacco. That's not magic — it's just what happens when you stop incinerating the top layer. The tobacco underneath actually gets a chance to release flavour instead of turning to ash.
The honest limitation: heat management devices like the Dragon Set work best with natural coconut coals. Quick-light coals burn too hot and too fast for this setup. If you're still using quick-lights, switch to natural coals first — the difference in taste alone is worth it, and the Dragon Set is designed around their burn profile.

Complete your shisha setup with natural coconut coals — they're the fuel the Dragon Set was designed for, burning at a lower, steadier temperature than quick-lights. A decent set of hookah tongs makes coal placement easier too, especially when you're adjusting mid-session.
Why You Actually Need a Shisha Heat Management Device
Here's what happens without one: you lay foil over your bowl, poke a pattern of holes (everyone's got their own "secret" configuration), stack 2–3 coals on top, and spend the next 45 minutes babysitting them. Move them too late and you get a harsh, burnt hit. Move them too early and the tobacco barely produces any smoke. It's a skill, sure, but it's also a chore — especially if you're trying to enjoy a session with mates rather than play coal-tetris on your own.
The Dragon Set turns shisha prep into something closer to set-and-forget. You still need to light your coals properly (fully ashed over, no black spots — give them 8–12 minutes on a coal burner), but once they're in the device, heat distribution is handled for you. The airflow vents let you fine-tune temperature without physically touching the coals. That means fewer harsh pulls, less wasted tobacco, and sessions that run noticeably longer.
Compared to the Kaloud Lotus, the Dragon Set is a more affordable entry point into heat management. Both do the same fundamental job — regulate coal heat over a shisha bowl — but the Dragon Set keeps things straightforward with a simpler design. If you've never used a heat management device before, this is a solid place to start. You can always upgrade later, but most people find they don't need to.
How to Use the Dragon Set
- Pack your shisha bowl with tobacco. Fluff-pack it loosely — don't press it down. Leave roughly 2mm of space between the tobacco and the rim of the bowl so the Dragon Set doesn't press directly onto it.
- Light 3 natural coconut coals on a coal burner. Wait until they're fully ashed over on all sides — this takes about 8–12 minutes. Grey all the way through, no black patches.
- Place the Dragon Set on top of your packed bowl. It should sit flush on the rim without wobbling.
- Set the 3 lit coals inside the Dragon Set, spacing them evenly.
- Close or adjust the lid and vents. Start with vents partially open and adjust based on smoke output and taste — more open means more heat, more closed means less.
- Give it 3–5 minutes to warm up before your first pull. The first few draws will be light; the flavour builds as the bowl reaches temperature.
- After 30–40 minutes, check your coals. If they've shrunk significantly, you can add fresh ones or adjust positioning. The Dragon Set makes this easy — just lift the lid.
