Beginner / first pipe: buy a classic glass spoon. The EHLE Glass Spoon Pipe or the RQS Glass Pipe will cover 95% of what you actually need — pocket-sized, sturdy, carb hole, done. Glass pipes crack. Not "might crack" — will, eventually, if you use them daily. That's not a quality issue, that's physics. Thicker-walled pieces like the Heavy Duty Spoon or Empire Glassworks Spoon Pipe (320g of solid glass) last longer, but nothing is indestructible. If you're hard on gear, get a wood pipe, a soapstone pipe, or the aluminium Køl 2.0.
Novelty pipes — the Gummy Bear, the Piranha Plant, the Kitty — smoke properly. We know, it sounds suspect. But Goody Glass and Hemper build them with functional bowls, real carb holes and sensible airpaths. They're still borosilicate under the paint.

Glass gives you the cleanest flavour and is easiest to clean. Wood (Calumet's Wapi, Mini Rocket) accepts activated charcoal filters for cooler, filtered draws. Soapstone absorbs heat so the pipe stays cool in your hand. Pick glass for taste, wood for filtration, stone for durability.

Isopropyl alcohol (90%+) and coarse salt. Pour both into the pipe, cover the openings, shake for 60 seconds, rinse with hot water. Do this weekly if you smoke daily. For stubborn resin, let it soak for a few hours first. Avoid soap — it leaves residue that tastes awful.
Only if it's designed for it. The Glass Pipe DMT and Spiral Glass Pipe DMT have rounded bulb chambers built to handle both a standard lighter on herbs and a torch on concentrates or oils. A regular spoon pipe will crack under a torch flame — don't try it.
