Propagator Pro 2 — Seed Germination Box with LED Lights and Thermometer

The Propagator Pro 2 is a compact, self-contained germination chamber that gives cannabis seeds the warm, humid, light-controlled environment they need to crack open and root. It ships flat, unfolds into a sturdy 13 x 10 x 13 cm box, and comes with built-in LED lighting, a thermometer strip, and a bag of perlite to maintain humidity. No fiddling with cling film over a saucer, no guessing whether your seeds are too cold — just pop them in, monitor the temperature, and wait.

Why the Propagator Pro 2 Beats a Windowsill

We get it — germinating seeds on a damp paper towel on a plate works. Sometimes. The problem is consistency. Temperature swings overnight, the towel dries out, you accidentally knock the plate, or the cat investigates. Every one of those moments can kill a seed that cost you real money.

The Propagator Pro 2 removes all of that. The enclosed box holds humidity steady — the included perlite sits at the bottom and keeps the air inside moist without waterlogging anything. The thermometer strip on the side lets you check conditions at a glance, in both Celsius and Fahrenheit, so you know immediately if your germination spot is too cool. And the six LEDs in the lid give seedlings just enough light once they break the surface, without you needing to rig up a desk lamp at an awkward angle.

We've seen customers lose expensive genetics to nothing more than a draughty kitchen counter. A few quid on a proper propagator saves you the cost of replacement seeds — and the frustration of starting over. Germination typically takes between 1 and 6 days inside this box. Once the seed leaves have fully emerged, you move the seedlings out and into their growing medium.

What's Inside the Propagator Pro 2 Box

The Propagator Pro 2 arrives in a flat, nondescript package with assembly instructions. Here's what you get:

The Propagator Pro 2 is sized to fit a tray of Smart Start grow pots — the organic plugs give your seeds a perfect rooting medium and make transplanting dead simple. Grab a Smart Start kit alongside the propagator and you've got a complete germination setup with zero improvisation required.

How to Use the Propagator Pro 2

  1. Unfold the flat-packed propagator following the included instructions. It clicks together into a solid box — no glue or tools needed.
  2. Spread the included perlite evenly across the bottom of the propagator. This layer holds moisture and keeps humidity high inside the chamber.
  3. Place your germination medium inside — the box is sized for a Smart Start tray, but a small container with damp paper towel or rockwool cubes works too.
  4. Insert your cannabis seeds into the medium according to the seed supplier's instructions. Generally, pointy end down, about 5 mm deep.
  5. Install batteries in the LED unit and switch on the lights. Close the lid.
  6. Check the thermometer strip — you want the internal temperature between 22°C and 25°C (72–77°F). Adjust the lid vents to raise or lower temperature as needed. If your room is cold, place the propagator on a heat mat (sold separately).
  7. Check daily. Keep the perlite and medium moist but not soaking. Mist lightly with a spray bottle if needed.
  8. Germination typically takes 1 to 6 days. Once seed leaves have fully emerged and opened, remove seedlings from the propagator and move them to their growing environment under proper lighting.

Beyond Seeds — Using It as a Nursery

The Propagator Pro 2 isn't only for germination. Once your seeds have sprouted, you can repurpose it as a sheltered nursery for weak seedlings that need a bit of extra humidity and warmth to establish themselves. It also works well for starting clones — small cuttings root faster in a warm, humid enclosure than they do sitting in the open air of a grow tent. The 13 x 13 cm footprint won't hold a forest, but for 4–6 cuttings in small plugs, it does the job.

The feel of the assembled box is surprisingly sturdy for something that ships flat. The walls are rigid enough that it won't collapse if you bump the shelf, and the vents give you genuine control rather than being decorative. It's not a heated propagator — there's no built-in heating element — so if your growing space drops below 20°C at night, pair it with a small heat mat underneath. That's the one limitation worth knowing about: in a cold room, the Propagator Pro 2 alone won't generate warmth. It insulates and retains, but it doesn't heat.

How It Compares to the Paper Towel Method

The paper towel method is free, and it works. We won't pretend otherwise. But here's what we've seen over 25 years of selling seeds: the number one reason people contact us about failed germination is environmental. The towel dried out. The plate was next to a window and got too cold overnight. Someone moved it. The Propagator Pro 2 eliminates those variables — sealed humidity, visible temperature reading, consistent light. If you're germinating a single freebie seed for fun, a damp towel is fine. If you've bought a pack of genetics you actually care about, the Propagator Pro 2 is cheap insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Propagator Pro 2 include a heat mat?

No. There's no built-in heating element. The propagator insulates and maintains humidity, but if your room is below 20°C you'll want a small heat mat underneath. We carry several that fit the 13 x 13 cm footprint.

What batteries does the LED light need?

The LED unit uses small button cell batteries. The exact type is listed in the assembly instructions included in the box. Batteries are not included, so pick some up before your seeds arrive.

Can I reuse the Propagator Pro 2 for multiple grows?

Yes. The box is sturdy enough for several rounds of germination. Wipe it down between uses and replace the perlite if it's looking tired. It won't last forever — it's cardboard-based — but you'll get good use out of it.

Do I need a Smart Start tray to use it?

No. The propagator is sized to fit Smart Start trays, but you can use any small germination medium that fits inside the 13 x 10 cm base — rockwool cubes, jiffy pellets, or even a damp paper towel on a small dish.

How long does germination take in the Propagator Pro 2?

Typically 1 to 6 days, depending on the seed variety and conditions. Once the seed leaves have fully emerged and opened, remove the seedlings and move them under proper grow lighting.

Is a heated propagator worth it compared to this?

Heated propagators are better for cold environments where room temperature regularly drops below 20°C. The Propagator Pro 2 works brilliantly in a warm room — it's smaller, cheaper, and includes lighting. If your space is consistently cold, a heated propagator or adding a heat mat is the better call.

Can I use the Propagator Pro 2 for clones?

Yes. The enclosed, humid environment helps small cuttings root faster. It'll hold 4–6 cuttings in small plugs comfortably. For larger cloning operations, you'd want a full-size dome and tray setup.
