Why a Pocket Microscope Matters at Harvest Time

Here's the thing about harvesting: get the timing wrong by even a few days and you're leaving potency on the table. Trichomes — those tiny resin glands covering your buds — go through a visible colour change as they mature. They start clear, turn milky white at peak potency, and eventually shift to amber as THC begins degrading into CBN. The naked eye can't reliably tell the difference. Even a standard magnifying glass struggles at this scale.

  4. Switch to 60x and focus on the trichome heads. You're looking at the bulbous tips, not the stalks. Bring the lens close to the bud surface without pressing into it — the focal distance is only a few millimetres.
  5. Check multiple spots on the plant. Top colas often mature faster than lower branches. Inspect at least 3-4 different buds across the canopy for a representative picture.
  6. Harvest when roughly 70-80% of trichome heads appear milky white with 20-30% turning amber. This ratio tends to deliver the strongest effect. More amber means a heavier, more sedative character; more milky means a more cerebral result.
