Why Yellowstone Seeds Deserve a Spot in Your Grow Room

The Kush Brothers have been quietly building a reputation on strains that deliver where it counts: resin, flavour, and yield. Yellowstone has won multiple awards in the resin category since its debut — and once you see the trichome coverage on a mature plant, that makes complete sense. This is a strain bred for extraction as much as for smoking.

The genetics tell the story. The Dark Side is The Kush Brothers' flagship — a heavy-hitting, resin-forward cultivar that forms the backbone of several of their best releases. Crossing it with Cheese brings in that unmistakable pungent sweetness, broadens the terpene profile, and adds a layer of growing resilience that makes the whole package more approachable. The 60/40 sativa-indica split means you get plants with decent stretch and open bud structure, which helps airflow and reduces the risk of mould in those dense, resinous colas.

Now, the honest bit: Yellowstone isn't a set-and-forget strain. It asks for a hands-on approach — some pruning, some training, regular check-ins. If you've grown photoperiod feminized seeds before and you're comfortable with basic plant maintenance, you'll be fine. If this is your very first grow, it's absolutely doable, but expect a learning curve. Compared to something like an autoflower that practically grows itself, Yellowstone asks you to earn those 550g/m² indoor yields. And at 800g/plant outdoors by end of September, the payoff is substantial.

One thing we'd flag: the sativa dominance means these plants can stretch significantly during the first weeks of flowering. If you're working with limited vertical space — say a 120cm tent — you'll want to flip to 12/12 early or use low-stress training to keep the canopy manageable. Growers with 180cm+ headroom will have a much easier time.

Running Yellowstone indoors? A proper grow tent keeps light, humidity, and temperature dialled in. Pair these seeds with a complete grow kit — tent, lighting, and ventilation sorted in one go — so you can focus on the plants rather than chasing equipment. A decent carbon filter is non-negotiable once those Cheese terps start filling the room.

Yellowstone Flavour and Aroma Profile

This is where the Cheese parentage really shines through. Crack open a cured jar of Yellowstone and you'll get hit with a wave of sweet, pungent funk — that classic Cheese sharpness layered over something deeper and earthier from The Dark Side genetics. It's not subtle. Your carbon filter will be earning its keep from week 6 of flower onwards.

On the inhale — whether smoked or vaped — there's a harmonious blend of sweetness and earthiness. The sweet notes land first, almost fruity, followed by a grounded, musky finish that lingers. Vaped at lower temperatures (around 180-190°C), the sweeter terpenes come forward more prominently. Combustion brings out the earthier, more pungent side. Either way, the flavour is dense and layered — this isn't a one-note strain.

The trichome production is worth mentioning again here because it directly affects what you taste and smell. Yellowstone's award-winning resin output means the terpene concentration is genuinely high. If you're into making extracts, dry sift, or rosin, this cultivar is practically built for it. The return on extraction is well above average.

How to Grow Yellowstone Seeds

  1. Germination: Soak your Yellowstone seeds in a glass of room-temperature water for 12-24 hours until they sink. Transfer to damp paper towels in a warm, dark spot (20-25°C). Taproots typically emerge within 24-72 hours.
  2. Seedling stage: Plant taproots 1cm deep in a light, airy medium — coco or a seedling-specific soil mix works well. Keep humidity high (65-70%) and lighting gentle. An 18/6 light schedule is standard for the vegetative phase.
  3. Vegetative growth: This is where your hands-on approach starts. Yellowstone responds well to topping and low-stress training (LST). Top once above the 4th or 5th node to encourage lateral branching and an even canopy. Remove lower growth that won't receive light — this redirects energy to the main colas.
  4. Flip to flower: Switch to a 12/12 light cycle when plants reach roughly half your desired final height. The sativa genetics mean Yellowstone will stretch 50-100% during the first 2-3 weeks of flowering. Plan accordingly.
  5. Flowering (weeks 1-5): Expect rapid vertical growth initially, then bud sites forming and filling in. Maintain good airflow — a small oscillating fan at canopy level helps prevent moisture pockets. Humidity should drop to 45-55%.
  6. Flowering (weeks 6-10): Buds fatten significantly. Trichome production ramps up hard from week 7 onwards. Lower humidity to 40-45% to protect those dense, resinous flowers. Check trichomes with a jeweller's loupe — harvest when most are milky with some amber for a balanced effect.
  7. Outdoor growers: Plant out after the last frost. Yellowstone thrives in warm, Mediterranean-style climates but handles northern European summers if you've got a sheltered, south-facing spot. Expect harvest by late September. The 800g/plant outdoor yield assumes full sun and a long enough growing season.
  8. Drying and curing: Hang whole branches in a dark room at 18-20°C and 55-60% humidity for 10-14 days. Trim and transfer to glass jars, burping daily for the first two weeks. A proper 4-week cure brings out the full sweetness and complexity of the Cheese-influenced terpene profile.

Yellowstone Effects: What to Expect

The sativa-dominant genetics deliver an uplifting, clear-headed onset that settles into a soothing physical relaxation as the indica side catches up. It's the kind of smoke that works in the afternoon without gluing you to the sofa — good for social situations, creative sessions, or just kicking off an evening. The initial lift is noticeable and fairly quick to arrive, followed by a gradual, comfortable wind-down.

The potency is real. The Kush Brothers bred Yellowstone from two already-strong parents, and the trichome density backs that up visually. If you're newer to stronger cultivars, start with a small amount and give it 10-15 minutes before deciding you need more. The effects are well-balanced, but underestimating the potency is an easy mistake with this one.
