Durban Cannabis Seeds by Sensi Seeds
Durban is a pure sativa cannabis strain bred by Sensi Seeds from original South African genetics sourced near the port city of Durban. Unlike most sativas that grow lanky and fussy, this one is built like a tank — wide, tall, and tough enough to handle less-than-ideal conditions while still delivering dense, resin-coated buds in 50–70 days of flowering. Available in packs of 3 or 10 regular seeds.
Pack Sizes
| Pack | Seeds | SKU |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 3 regular seeds | CSSE0059 |
| Standard | 10 regular seeds | CSSE0036 |
Go with the 10-pack if you're pheno-hunting. With regular seeds you'll get roughly a 50/50 male-to-female split, so 3 seeds might only give you 1–2 females. The 10-pack gives you enough room to select the best mother plant.
Why Durban Seeds Deserve a Spot in Your Garden
Most pure sativas are a commitment. They stretch to the ceiling, flower for 12+ weeks, and throw a fit if conditions aren't dialled in. Durban breaks that mould. Sensi Seeds sourced their original genetics directly from the Durban region of South Africa, where this landrace strain has been growing under harsh, hot sun for generations. The result is a sativa with genuine resilience — thick stems, vigorous branching, and a flowering window of just 50–70 days. That's fast by any sativa standard.
We've carried Sensi Seeds since the early days — they've been breeding since 1985, and their seed vault is one of the most respected in the industry. When they say "original, untampered genetics," they mean it. This isn't a backcrossed hybrid dressed up with a famous name. It's the real thing, maintained in regular form so breeders and experienced growers can work with the full genetic range.
The honest limitation? These are regular seeds, not feminised. You'll need to sex your plants and remove males unless you're intentionally breeding. If you just want female plants with zero fuss, Sensi Seeds does offer a feminised Durban — but the regular version gives you access to both male and female genetics for breeding projects or selecting a standout phenotype.
Growing Durban Sativa Seeds: What to Expect
Durban grows wide and tall. Give each plant serious elbow room — cramming them together is the fastest way to lose lower bud sites to shade. If space is tight, the ScrOG (Screen of Green) method works well here. Training the branches through a horizontal screen encourages multiple single colas rather than one dominant central stem, and those colas come out dense and absolutely caked in resin.
- Germinate your regular Durban seeds using your preferred method — paper towel, direct soil, or jiffy pellets all work. Sensi Seeds genetics tend to pop reliably within 48–72 hours.
- Transplant seedlings into their final containers or outdoor plots once they've developed 2–3 sets of true leaves. Use pots of at least 15 litres for indoor grows; outdoors, the bigger the better.
- Maintain at least 50–60 cm spacing between plants. Durban's lateral branching is aggressive — she'll fill every centimetre you give her.
- Identify and remove male plants once pre-flowers appear (typically 4–6 weeks from seed). Males show small pollen sacs at the nodes; females show white pistils.
- Switch to a 12/12 light cycle indoors to trigger flowering. Outdoors, flowering initiates naturally as daylight hours shorten.
- Expect 50–70 days of flowering. Watch the trichomes — milky with a few amber heads is the sweet spot for a cerebral sativa effect.
- Harvest, dry for 7–10 days in a dark room at around 18–21 degrees Celsius and 55–60% humidity, then cure in glass jars for at least 2 weeks.
Yields are above average for a sativa when conditions are met. Outdoors in a warm climate, expect generous harvests. Indoors under 600W HPS or equivalent LED, you'll get solid returns from each female — especially if you've trained them through a screen.

Durban Terpene Profile and Flavour
This is where Durban really sets itself apart from other sativas. The flavour profile is tropical and sweet up front, then shifts to a bitter, lemony bite on the exhale. It's distinctive — once you've tasted it, you'll recognise it anywhere. According to a study on human olfactory discrimination of cannabis varieties, Durban Poison was specifically selected to represent the citrus, lemon, sweet, and pungent terpene cluster (de Groot et al., 2022, PMC9651054). That's not marketing — that's researchers literally picking this strain as the archetype for that entire flavour group.
The aroma during flowering is equally strong. Expect a sweet, almost overripe fruit scent with sharp citrus notes that will fill your grow room. A carbon filter isn't optional if you're growing indoors and value discretion.
Durban Sativa Effects: Cerebral and Intense
Durban delivers an intense, cerebral head effect. It starts with an uplifting, energising rush that gradually shifts into a deep, thought-provoking state. Sensi Seeds describes it as having a "psychedelic trance" quality — this is a daytime strain that demands your attention. THC levels in strong Durban Poison phenotypes typically range from 17% to 25% with minimal CBD, so the effect is overwhelmingly THC-driven.
According to research published in StatPearls (NCBI NBK563174), THC interacts with CB1 receptors in the central nervous system, which accounts for the pronounced cerebral effects associated with high-THC, low-CBD sativa strains like Durban. Current cannabis research is more focused on properties related to pain relief, nausea, appetite stimulation, and anti-inflammatory applications, according to a 2024 review of South African cannabis research (PMC11478489).
A word from behind our counter: less experienced users should go easy. The intensity can catch you off guard, especially with a well-grown, properly cured batch. Start small, give it 15–20 minutes, and see where you land before going back for more.
Growing Durban indoors? Pair it with a ScrOG net to manage the lateral stretch and maximise cola production. If you're setting up a new grow space, a complete grow tent kit with carbon filter will keep the strong citrus aroma contained. For outdoor growers in cooler climates, consider starting seeds indoors under a propagation light before transplanting outside after the last frost.
Durban vs Other Pure Sativa Seeds
Most pure sativas in our catalogue come with a warning: long flowering times, stretchy growth, and a need for experienced hands. Durban flips that script. Where a Thai or Haze sativa might flower for 12–16 weeks and triple in height during the stretch, Durban finishes in 50–70 days and stays relatively compact for a sativa. The buds are denser too — more like what you'd expect from an indica-leaning hybrid, but with full sativa effects.
Compared to Sensi Seeds' own Skunk #1 (which we also carry), Durban is a completely different animal. Skunk #1 is indica-dominant, shorter, faster, and produces a body-heavy effect. Durban is all head — cerebral, energetic, and intense. If you want to grow both, they make excellent companion plants in a mixed garden: the Skunk finishes first and gives you something to smoke while the Durban reaches peak resin production.
| Trait | Durban (Sensi Seeds) | Typical Haze Sativa | Skunk #1 (Sensi Seeds) |
