Salvia

Salvia divinorum is the Mazatec sacred sage — a mint-family plant from Oaxaca containing salvinorin A, a kappa opioid receptor agonist that sits in its own pharmacological category. Azarius has carried salvia since 1999, and we stock the full ladder: plain dried leaf through 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 30x, 40x and 80x extracts. Buy the strength that matches your experience, not the one that sounds impressive on paper.

Buy Salvia Divinorum — Leaf and Extract Strength Guide

Salvia divinorum is sold in two formats: plain dried leaf, and concentrated extracts labelled by multiplier (5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 30x, 40x, 80x). The number refers to how much salvinorin A the extract contains relative to an equal weight of untreated leaf. Leaf is traditional and mild. Extracts are short, intense, and scale fast — the jump from 20x to 40x is not "twice as strong" in lived experience, it's an entirely different room.

Eight products, one plant, huge range. The table below is the fastest way to work out what to order.

Reading tip: pick by format first (leaf vs extract), then by experience. A beginner choosing between 40x and 80x is picking the wrong shelf entirely — start at leaf or 5x.

Leaf vs Extract — Two Different Products

Plain salvia leaf and salvia extracts are genuinely different experiences, not just different strengths. The leaf, chewed as a Mazatec-style quid, releases salvinorin A slowly through the mouth's mucous membranes — the effect builds over 10–20 minutes and fades gradually. Bitter as anything. Traditional. Mild.

Extracts are salvinorin A dusted onto leaf material at higher concentration. Smoked or vaporised, the compound hits the bloodstream within seconds, peaks inside a minute, and is gone in 5–15 minutes. Short, sharp, and — at higher multipliers — completely dissociative. We get asked "which is stronger, leaf or 10x?" at least once a week. The 10x is stronger per gram, but the leaf's slower delivery produces a different character entirely. One isn't a diluted version of the other.

How to Choose Your Salvia

Never tried salvia before: buy the 5 g dried leaf. Chew it as a quid — Mazatec tradition, lower intensity, teaches you what salvinorin A feels like before you commit to extract territory. If you want to skip leaf and go straight to extract, the 5x is the lowest-strength concentrate we stock and the correct entry point.

Tried 5x or 10x, ready for more: the 15x and 20x are the sweet spot. Strong enough to deliver the full salvia character, but with dose margins wide enough that you're not measuring in grains of rice. Most people who settle into salvia never need to go higher than 20x.

Experienced, know your threshold: 30x and 40x come in 0.5 g packs because you simply don't need more. Single hit, full session. The 80x is the strongest extract we carry — a single dose measures 5–10 mg. It's not stronger-is-better territory; it's precision territory. Get the dose wrong and you've wasted the sachet.

When in doubt, order down. Salvia punishes impatience more than almost anything else in the shop.

Smoking, Vaporising, or Chewing

Leaf is chewed as a quid — rolled into a ball, held in the cheek, and slowly worked for 10–15 minutes. Swallow the juice, don't spit. Extracts are smoked in a bong or pipe (a standard lighter often isn't hot enough — a torch lighter or jet flame is the usual tool) or vaporised at 200–230°C. Salvinorin A is heat-sensitive but needs proper temperature to volatilise; underheating is the single most common reason people say "it didn't work." It worked — you just didn't get it hot enough.

Whichever method you pick, have a tripsitter. Not optional. The effects come on within seconds of a proper hit, and for the 5–15 minutes that follow you will not be navigating your living room safely. Sit down, low light, no stairs, no candles, no hot drinks within arm's reach. Sitter stays quiet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between salvia leaf and salvia extract?

Leaf is whole dried plant material at natural salvinorin A strength, traditionally chewed as a quid for a slow, mild effect. Extracts are concentrated salvinorin A applied back onto leaf — smoked or vaporised for a short, intense experience lasting 5–15 minutes. Different delivery, different character.

Which salvia extract strength should I buy first?

Start with the 5x — it's the lowest-strength extract we stock and the correct first-extract experience. If you'd rather follow the Mazatec approach, buy the plain dried leaf and chew it as a quid. Skip 30x, 40x and 80x entirely until you've used the lower strengths.

How long do salvia effects last?

Smoked extract: 5–15 minutes from first hit to baseline, with the peak inside the first 2 minutes. Chewed leaf quid: onset around 10–20 minutes, total duration 45–60 minutes, much gentler arc. Salvia is the shortest-acting psychoactive on our shelves.

Is salvinorin A the same as other psychedelics?

No. Salvinorin A is a kappa opioid receptor agonist — structurally unrelated to psilocybin, LSD, or mescaline, which act on serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. It's the only known naturally occurring KOR agonist with this kind of profile, which is why the experience doesn't resemble classical psychedelics at all.

Do I need a sitter for salvia?

Yes. For smoked extracts especially, you'll be non-functional for 5–15 minutes and won't remember where you are. Sitter keeps you seated, keeps the space safe, stays quiet.
