Tropicanna Banana by Barney's Farm — a heavy-yielding sativa hybrid

Tropicanna Banana is a feminised photoperiod cannabis seed that produces huge, trichome-packed colas on a compact 110cm frame. Bred by Barney's Farm from a cross between Tropicanna (Girl Scout Cookies x Tangie) and Banana Kush, she leans 60% sativa and 40% indica — giving you sativa-dominant structure and flavour without the stretchy canopy nightmare.

Honestly, she's one of the easier photoperiods we stock. The buds double overnight in late flower, the pistils turn properly colourful, and the plant laughs off botrytis, powdery mildew and spider mites. If you've killed a few grows to mould or mites already — this is a sensible reset.

Why Tropicanna Banana is worth growing

Most heavy-yielding strains punish you somewhere — either they stretch 180cm and blow out your tent, or they demand perfect humidity or they fold the moment a spider mite looks at them. Tropicanna Banana dodges all three. The indica-leaning structure keeps her around 110cm indoors, the genetics carry genuine resistance to the three blights that ruin most home grows, and she still pushes the kind of trichome load you'd expect from a boutique cut.

The flavour is where she earns her name. Tangie and GSC on one side give you that juicy citrus top note; Banana Kush on the other rounds it out with a sweet, creamy finish. It's not subtle — open a jar in the next room and you'll know about it. If you've grown Tangie before and loved the smell but hated the stretch, this is the version that fits in a normal tent.

She's also a solid outdoor option across southern Europe. Hot and temperate is where she thrives, and the mould resistance means late-season rain won't wipe out the top colas. For a sativa-dominant hybrid, that's rare.

How to grow Tropicanna Banana

  1. Germinate using the paper towel method or direct-sow into moist soil. Feminised seeds don't need any special treatment — just warmth (22-25°C) and patience for 2-5 days.
  2. Veg for 4-5 weeks indoors. She responds well to light training (LST, low-stress tying) to open up the canopy. Skip heavy topping if you're new — she'll bush out naturally.
  3. Flip to 12/12 when she's around 40-50cm. Expect her to finish around 110cm indoors after stretch.
  4. Feed moderately. Grow-diary reports show around 4-6ml of base nutrient per 1.5L during flower works well in coco; soil growers can go lighter.
  5. Watch for colas doubling in late flower — support the heaviest branches with stakes or netting before they snap.
  6. Harvest when 70-80% of pistils have darkened and trichomes are milky with a few ambers. Slow-dry at 18°C and 55-60% humidity for 10-14 days, then cure in glass jars.

Honest limitations — what to watch for

She's beginner-friendly but she's still a photoperiod, not an autoflower. You control the light schedule, which means a stray lamp or a light leak during flower will cause herming or reveg. If you're worried about that, an autoflower strain is a more forgiving starting point.

The other thing: those massive colas look spectacular but they need airflow. Pack her into a crowded tent with no oscillating fan and even her mould resistance won't save you. Keep at least one clip-on fan moving air through the canopy from week 4 of flower onwards.

Pairs well with a quality carbon filter setup — this strain is pungent, and without extraction your whole flat will smell like a fruit-and-citrus bomb. A 60x60 or 80x80 grow tent with carbon filter kit handles one or two plants comfortably. For feeding, a standard base-nutrient line like BioBizz or Canna Coco will do the job without overcomplicating things.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Tropicanna Banana taste like?

Juicy citrus up front from the Tangie/GSC side, with a creamy sweet banana finish from the Banana Kush parent. It's loud, fruity and tropical — not a subtle strain in the jar or on the exhale.

Is Tropicanna Banana good for beginners?

Yes, especially outdoors. She's resistant to botrytis, powdery mildew and spider mites, stays compact at around 110cm, and handles a wide range of conditions. The only beginner trap is photoperiod light discipline — no light leaks during the 12/12 phase.

How tall does she grow indoors?

Around 110cm indoors under a standard 12/12 flip. That makes her a good fit for 80x80 or 100x100 tents. Outdoors she'll go taller in warm climates — expect 150-180cm depending on pot size and veg time.

How long does Tropicanna Banana flower?

Barney's Farm lists her flowering time at around 55-65 days indoors. Outdoor harvest in the northern hemisphere falls in early to mid October, depending on your latitude and weather.

What's the THC level?

Barney's Farm classes her as a high-THC strain, with the breeder listing THC around 25%. Actual numbers depend on your grow — light intensity, harvest timing and curing all shift the final result by several percent.

Does she need special feeding?

No — a standard cannabis nutrient line works fine. Grow-diary reports suggest moderate feeding during veg (around 4ml per 1.5L of base nutrient in coco) stepping up slightly in flower. She's not a heavy feeder like some Kush-heavy strains.
